Happy Thanksgiving!!!
So what has been happening around Northeast Ohio and CRO as of late?  I will try and sum it up for you.  Pete and Fabian where enjoying the nice Fall weather and catching nice big fish while i was working at the shop all the time.  Then the bottom fell out of the nice weather and the snow began to fall and many of the anglers went home allowing those anglers who are toughing it out some elbow room and the fishing got pretty decent.  Then it got really really cold and we got ice and more snow....pretty much no one was happy.  Now the rain is falling and temps are supposed to be in the 50's for a few days, which is great news.....steelhead anglers being eternal optimists are happy again.  The theory being that the rain and warm temps will clear out the ice and snow, bring in more steelhead, and the fishing will be awesome the weekend after thanksgiving and get many steelheaders favorite month of December off to a banging start, sounds great to me.

Its also holiday time again and we are stocking the shop up with the latest goodies and a few surprises as well.  As always we ask that you support your local fly shop during the holidays and keep us in mind for any mail orders you may have as well.  Even if we don't have it in the shop we can get it and are  happy to get whatever you may need.

Holiday shop hours:
Mon:  10-6   Tue: 10-8  Wed: 10-6  Thur:  10-8
Fri:  10-6  Sat: 10-5  Sun:  10-3

Below are some nice pics to sum up the Fall and also a preview of some great new gear and gifts we have at the shop.  Tight lines from Dan and Pete

Slobster browns have been fairly prevalent in some of the PA tribs this Fall.

Snow helped create a little elbow room on the rivers the last few weeks.

Before the real cold set in the fishing was the best it has been all season.

This early artic blast also has us looking forward to Mexico in February and the Bahamas in March.  If sun, sand and great flats fishing sounds good to you let us know, we would love for you to join us.

For all the current or wannabe swingers out there we are stocked up at the shop and may have some great deals if you stop down after Thanksgiving.
New 2015 simms freestone and boa boots, traveling fly tying kits, wader and gear bags, fishpond vests and packs and a whole lot more.

FYI Rum is not for sale but many other great gifts for the fly fisher!

Football and Steelheading, thats what Ohio does.

The King is back, the Browns beat the Steelers, and the steelhead are running, all is right in the CLE.  Good Numbers of steelhead in all the rivers for middle of October in Ohio and anglers are having pretty good success.  Reports coming in from anglers and our guide staff are very encouraging and more good reports about steelhead catches this Fall than all of last Fall put together it seems, so we are off to a good start.  We just got some much needed rain which will help spread the fish out and bring in more so if you have not hit the water yet, it is time.  We also have some some great new gear that includes fly lines, new steelhead sticks, shop t-shirts and hoodies, and a saltwater fly fishing venue/school down Mexico way this February.  Check out some pics and remember to support your local fly shops.  Tight lines from Dan and Pete.

Nice early Fall Chagrin River Steelhead

Conneaut Creek has good numbers of steelhead  and just got some water, should fish well this Fall.

June is a busy time of year for most folks, and doubly so for the fisherman, bringing some of the best fishing of the year around the country.  Only problem is there never seems to be enough time to fling a fly in all the waters you planned on, maybe next year.  June also brings us time to celebrate family and loved ones, including Dads and recent Graduates.  Maybe Dad taught you how to fish, or the graduate is a son or daughter you have created special memories with on the water.  Whatever the case may be remember to create a few more.  If you get time on Saturday June 14th bring Dad or the recent graduate to the shop and have lunch on us.  We are having a cookout form 11:30-1:30 and will also have fly tying demos from 12-3 and some great sale items as well.

Dads and Grads cookout, fly tying, and sales event.
Where: Chagrin River Outfitters
When: Saturday June 14th, cookout 11-30:1:30 Bass bug tying demos 12-3. Sale all day.
Great deals on close out rods, select wading boots, fly lines, sink tips, and more.
See you Saturday.

Plenty of rain and cool temps means June should have great trout fishing in PA and MI.

Locally the bass bite is heating up and topwater fun has started.

Always nice to share tips with experienced anglers while on the water.

Rewarded with a nice wild brown from PA.

Shop is stocked up with great fishing shirts, pants, hats. new fly lines and more for summer destination trips.

Steelhead, Bass, and trouts....May has been good. Great new tackle and gear at the shop.

May has been a good month for the fly fisher in Ohio and Pennsylvania.  Our tribs had great steelheading thru mid month and still a few around as i write this.  The big lake run smallmouth have showed up as well and should continue to provide good fishing thru mid june.  In PA the rain and cool weather has the bugs and fishing a little behind schedule but that is not a bad thing.  Like everywhere else things there are just a little late and fishing should be great the rest of May as water levels stabilize and June will be fantastic.  For you flats fishers that like to patrol Presque Isle once again water temps are cold, things are off to a slow start but like last year June should be on fire.  Don't forget to support your local fly shops.
Great gift for Dads.

New sharkwave fly lines have been a big hit with anglers.

Tying class June 5th, 6-8pm.  One night only, cost $25 includes materials.  Hoppers, ants, and beetles for summer time trout, bass, and bluegills.

May was our best month for steelhead on the Erie tribs by far.

New fiberglass rods at the shop for those feathery dry fly presentations that fussy trout prefer and that make 8 inch bluegills feel like 5 pound steelhead.

About darn time!

The weather has broken, sun is shining and the fish are biting, all is good again.  The local steelhead tribs have been producing very well the last week and we expect the fishing to be strong through mid-may this year.  The Pa trout season is off to a slow start but picking up steam as water temps continue to warm up to more favorable temps.  Lake run smallmouth have started to show up but don't expect big numbers any time soon in the river or bays until that water warms up a few degrees.  Tight lines and don't forget to support your local fly shop, Dan and Pete.

Where you at Spring? Steelhead forecasts and trout seminar.

As the sun rises on the last day of April i look outside and see snow on the ground and a forecast for temps in the high 40's and low 50's for the day and coming week.  So goes the winter of 2014 and hopefully this is the last we see of it.  Steelhead season is off to a slow start as a result of the long winter  but don't let that get you down, there is good news.  We have very high expectations for a very good spring steelhead season that should last well into May so there is plenty of good fishing to look forward to.  Fresh fish have started to enter the rivers and they should start in big numbers literally any day.  The PA trout opener is on the 12th of April which is always a great event and bass, walleye, pike, musky and more await anglers preparing for ice out.  Check below for what has been going on around the shop and if you have time stop in for a great early season trout seminar Saturday the 5th.  Hope everyone has a great spring and remember to support your local fly shop.  Thanks from Dan and Pete.

Early season trout tactics with Dan Pribanic:  1 pm-2:30 pm at Chagrin River Outfitters.
Techniques, flies, and approaches to targeting early season trout. How to deal with cold water, high water, early season hatches, how to match them, go to fly patterns, and more.  With trout season just getting underway this is a great primer for anglers of all skill levels.  See you Saturday at the shop, Dan and Pete.

Stop in Saturday April 5th for a great seminar on early season trout tactics at 1pm.

Shop is stocked with some great gear for spring.

Angler trying his luck at swinging up a March steelhead on the Chagrin.  Should be a great spring for swinging flies.

I would rather fish without my waders than not have a good pair of polarized sunglasses.

We are thinking spring around the shop and have some great new fishing shirts and pants.

South Carolina low country redfish.

In like a lion, out like a lamb....lets hope.

Mid march in Ohio and after a Looooooong winter it looks like spring is trying to make an appearance. The rivers are opening up and guys are thinking of the pleasures spring will bring.  Obviously steelhead season is here, trout fishing will be happening as well over in PA, lake run smallmouth and wading the flats of Presque Isle are all on peoples minds and rightfully so.  Here at the shop we have been stocking the shelves with great new simms packs and wading boots, fly reels, and more, tying flies, and hosting trips to warmer climes.  Pete will be taking down a second group to Mexico this Sunday after a great February trip.  We also had a small group down in the Bahamas in January which was great.  We look forward to things cranking up here again locally as spring fishing opportunities begin anew.

Don't forget your 2014 fishing license.

Pete has been introducing many new anglers to the pleasures of saltwater flats angling this winter.  He will be doing the same next year as well for anyone interested its never to early to sign up.

Our friend Tom here took to the flats like a duck to water, recording a grand slam (bonefish, permit, snook) on his first day of saltwater angling, impressive.

Locally the rivers are opening up and i think it is safe to say anglers will be hitting the rivers the week of March 17th and finding a few fish.

Think Spring!

Cold, cold, and more cold has been the story here in Northeast Ohio for some time now.  Anglers are coming into the shop just itching for some good news on the local fishing front and i'm not sure what to tell them.  Best case scenario winters loosens its grip sooner than later since it began so early this year.  No matter what happens i know the guys will be ready when the weather breaks.  For now lots of fly tiers spinning bugs for the spring steelhead run and early season trouting.
